      Many users are creating their own tools to work with GIS data; 63% of respondents reported Python as their preferred programming language. The Earth Science Data Systems (ESDS) GIS Team was created to enable the appropriate use and adoption of GIS technology in support of Earth science research and applied science for EOSDIS data.     The papers presented at a symposium on geocoding describe the preparation of a geocoded data file, some basic applications for education planning, and its use in trend analysis to produce contour maps for any desired characteristic. Geocoding data involves locating each entity, such as students or schools, in terms of grid coordinates on a surface, and in conjunction with computer techniques. This book is the outcome of the Dagstuhl Seminar on "Similarity-Based Clustering" held at Dagstuhl Castle, Germany, in Spring In three chapters, the three fundamental aspects of a theoretical background, the representation of data and their connection to algorithms, and particular challenging applications are considered.
